Gear whine *do not think crank related* Help

2008 CBR1000rr 6500mi

Today when I went to lunch I noticed a whine that I'm pretty sure was not there when I went to work in the morning. It is very faint, and I can almost tune it out if I try.

There is no whine when in neutral and revving the engine. When put into gear, it is most noticeable at low RPM (not sure if it's just b/c my exhaust drowns it out after). It is most noticeable in first second and third gears. Noise gets louder as RPMs go up.

I do not think this is related to a bad crank as it sounds fine in neutral and the noise is not very loud.

Could this be related to backlash adjustment? Just not sure why it would appear so suddenly. Any insight would be appreciated!

does it change depending on if the clutch is engaged or not?
It could be the outer clutch plate cracked... very common if you didnt get the clutch upgrade done.

It does not make the noise when I pull the clutch and release, only when moving. The clutch recall has been done.

only when moving?
can you completely rule out an overtight chain, or a tight spot in the chain? are the sprockets (both of them) in good condition, or is one wearing oddly?

if you roll down the road, pull in the clutch and kill the engine, does the noise continue? (aka trans and chain still turning)

with the kill switch still off, let the clutch out (slowly) does the whine come in as the engine starts turning by the trans?

i'll try this on my way home in a min. When you say let the clutch out slowly, am I letting it out all the way and fully engaging? Or do I just let out slowly until it starts to engage and listen?

The chain and sprockets look to be in good condition and only have 6500 miles of light riding on them

Ok tried it. It does not make the noise rolling engine off with clutch disengaged. As soon as I begin to engage the clutch it starts.

It is a very minor whining noise and it may be that I'm just noticing it because I haven't ridden it in a week or so. Dunno.

My '12 makes a noise that you are describing. I have written it off as clutch noise and ignore it. It burns no oil, it shifts well, and runs like a banshee. It pulled 80 miles on a Dyno Saturday without issue.

so could it have anything to do with the backlash adjustment? how often are you supposed to mess with that? seems a little soon at 6500 mi. I rode it this morning and i'm pretty sure it wasn't there a few days ago. I was thinking that it could have been one of those things that once you hear, you can't unhear but not anymore.

Thanks, it sounds normal at idle though which is one of the main descriptions of the crank problem. Also, you really have to listen for the noise and I've heard a bad crank is very noticeable.
