OP, you considering the <'08 or >'09? Somewhat different machines with the crossplane crank IMO. I took a spin on a '10 and other than the sound I wasn't hugely impressed but get what you like.

VERY important. Alot of things changed when they went to the crossplane. Kind of like the 07 to 08 CBR. I put together a wrecked 07 R1. If there's one thing I can say, they're easier to work on than the Hondas. I liked those models. The newer ones not so much.

03 r1 was my first bike, i put a lot of money into it and it didnt make much more hp than bikes are coming with now, i looked into the newer r1s 09+ and rode a couple but they're too heavy for my liking so i got my 2012 1krr

great info guys i did not go to work today went to see a 12r1 rode it and eehhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! im sticking to honda way havier and the seat is weird nice looking bike but does not fit me hopefully by this weekend ill go see the 121krr but thanks for all the info guys great site great ppl and great help.

I love R1's! An R1 was my first bike. That said they are the worst Japanese liter bikes. IMO they look the best and sound the best (with just race baffles in stock exhaust and gutted cat), but your honda will out perform it in every way. Now having said that I should have gotten the got the 09+ R1 instead of my honda. I'm never going to anything on my Honda that an R1 can't do just easily.

Edit: if you get one, get carbon firber frame covers or chrome it thats your thing. The right side of the frame on that sob gets hot. Literally burned the inside of the thigh through jeans. Unlike my Honda my legs rested on the frame of the R1 tho.
