i noticed on my front compression dial that the reference dots on the dial and the casting don't match up when i turn them to full soft. actually, one side will be off 20 degrees and the other will be around 35 to 40 off. should i still go by the reference points when changing my settings or should i go in from the full soft?

lightly bottom the screws and use the number of turns in/out to reference, make a visual reference of the clock position when there bottomed and adjust equally from there.you can use a felt tip pen to mark the starting point if you want, wipes off easy when done.

Don't worry, the marks on the swingarm don't line up either for the chain slack.
As stated turn them in(full stiff) and back out from there evenly)
.Enjoy!
