Silvy 12-25-2008, 01:54 PM Well, I got a new camera for Christmas. It's an Olympus E-510. Probably would prefer a Nikon, but the Moms got it for me so I'll be happy.
If anyone has any experience with these, post up.
I'll be (actually the gf will) using this taking pics of my trackdays. If you have any recommendations for glass for longer range shots, help a brudda out. I figure it'll need to go about 1000' or so, as we have no infield access at the trackdayz I run with.
Looking forward to learning something from you camera gurus (bristol, black, mojo, etc).
Thanks for listening.
MLauderdale1000rr 12-25-2008, 04:01 PM I have a SLR too, Canon XTI and still am a noob! I open for pointers as well!
Nice deal Silvy!!
Silvy 12-25-2008, 04:05 PM Thanks, Mike.
You purchased any glass yet? Mine came with a 14x42, I think. I need some long-range action....

-Ace- 12-25-2008, 10:46 PM 28-135 IS is an awesome inexpensive all around lens ML
Silvy i dont have any experience with Olympus SLR's, i know that finding glass wont be as easy as if you were looking for a Nikon or Canon so you may not get the good deals on used glass but check BHphotovideo.com for deals. Also if your wifey is shooting pics of you at TWS she can get very close to the track at turns 9 and 9b
Strand 12-25-2008, 11:35 PM Why not return it and get a Nikon/Canon?

Cool. Thanks Acey.

Cuz the Moms bought it for me. Out of the blue, I didn't even ask for one. She went a few places, asked the questions, and that's what I got. Reckon I have a soft spot for that.
BristolHooligan 12-26-2008, 07:16 AM welcome to the fold guys,
ML, the xti is a great camera I had one myself for a good while and it will do all you need, get yourself a 50mm prime if your taking people/static shots as they are super cheap and teach you alot about using settings with a static focal length. if you can rent lenses locally i would borrow a 70-200 IS USM at some stage to take some shots at a trackday etc and see why its one of the best lenses out there!
Silvy, congrats bud, I have to agree with Ace I do not know about olympus, I use canon and have a little experience with nikon...I do know sony and olympus are producing some stunning cameras these days, lens wise you can create some stunning shots with a 400mm on a crop body (not sure if your dslr is a crop but would assume so) at the track, does depend how close you are but 400 on a crop is around 600mm which is a hefty zoom indeed.
I can explain some terms above if you need me to?? let me know.
Merry Christmas guys
Silvy 12-26-2008, 08:19 AM Thanks, Dan. Very good input there.
shocker69 12-26-2008, 09:13 AM Congrats Silvy. Been looking for a better camera myself. Just no loot right now.

A soft spot? You act like it has been passed down 10 generations. Don't be a bitch. I'm sure if you told her the situation she wouldn't give a fuck.
big0mike 12-28-2008, 08:15 PM I've found that while I own more than two I generally have only two lenses on my 1D: 16-35 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8.
Get these two lenses and you'll probably not need anything further...

If you can't afford them buy something with a similar zoom range. The difference will be you'll probably have to settle for a f/4.0-5.6 lens instead of an f/2.8 lens.
LosPer 12-28-2008, 09:08 PM Sil, PM Bosarge and Muahman. They are all in with glass and can set you right.
Awesome gift from mom. I got a shirt and sweater this year.
