Has anyone sprayed there wheels. I have a 2012 HRC with the black rims. I love the SP gold wheel finish and was trying to match the paint, but can't seem to find the colour code anywhere. Anyone have an SP and know the answer? I would be very grateful.
You might be able to look it up in a parts catalog for 2014. You might have to fine the model number for a sp blade first (cbr1000rra, cbr1000ra.ex...)
Sorry give me a short time to get up to speed, I have been rather poorly for a few months, hope to be back up to speed soon and will update with what I have done
I have the paint code and have found someone to powdercoat them just haven't gotten around to it either. Did you paint or powder coat? How did it turn out?
I had all the good intentions of doing this over the winter, but picked up an injury at work earlier last November, not ridden since and only just getting back to work. So unfortunately project GOLD has been placed on hold. Bike is in for service tomorrow and it's first MOT, been told that because of my miles that wont be an expensive service, so will possibly be able to make progress into having this completed before full ridding season is back and I loose interest in laying the bike up for a couple of weeks, as it does entail, bike on stands wheels removed and tyres, ancillaries removed, taking to refurbish. Collecting, having side valve installed, something I promised myself after getting fed up with how awkward doing my tyre pressures is. Having tyres replaced and balanced, new bearings, and then re install, That's about two weeks with other work commitments. But first let's see how my first ride in three months goes, and then theres a bike show in a week, so I need to not spend too much there, lol. I will update with any further.
Well I decided to go down the gold wheels line after a number plate exploding from a stone and getting caught in a fast turning rear wheel. It left several chips in the original black finish. I went to my local Powder coating specialist who I was recommended, but this is how it all broke down.
Remove wheels, remove all ancillaries and bearings. (new bearings front and rear £60)
Have tyre and valve removed £10
powder coat front and rear to a gold that they could not show a finished product on for matching the colour. £235 with VAT.
Tyre replaced and balanced £15
New bearings fit, total cost = £320
That was more than i was budgeting for so I looked online, and saw how to do it with cans and tyre on. I have included some pics but could not get them in the right order. I removed all the lacquer with 1200 grit, and smoothed out the chips, i then gave them an etching
coat which I repeated three times ruling down with 2000 grit between each coat. I then gave three coats of drift gold but only rubbed the first two coats as the paint is metallic I thought this would be fine for the new lacquer to bite into. I was so pleased with the finish, the lacquer is so smooth, friends who have looked at the wheels, ask how much it cost and where did I take it. Well it cost £32 for the paint and about £5 for the grit. I thought if it doesn't work then I have only lost less than £40. The fact that I have the paint now, if anything does mark them in the future i can just rub it down and repair them. I can really recommend a heater and something to mount the wheels on, like in the picture, you can spin the wheel as you spray and not only does it help stop runs it also helps you get into every nuke & cranny without turning the can u its side and changing the spray pattern. I sourced the paint from EBAY it is advertised as Bronze Drift Gold and the paint make is AUTO IMPARTS.COM. You can even buy them as a pack with etch gold and E-TECH lacquer all in one purchase. I did buy two gold, and just used a little of the second to get the Finnish. I hope this helps, and i wish I had not taken so long. i thought leaving the tyres on would be a mistake, but judge for yourselves.
Great results. I'm not a hands on guy so mine are awaiting a powder coat. Wheels are off and bearings are out. I'm waiting on some swatches to get best color match possible.
Bumping the thread just in case someone has done a powder coat in gold like the 2014 SP. If so what color did you go with? Regular Honda paint code is useless for powder coating.
its funny how you guys want the gold wheels, me personally can't stand them on my bike. the only reason i still got them is because i want to keep all the originals parts for the SP. Since my SP is track only as soon as i find a good set of black wheels i will put the gold ones in storage with the rest of the bodywork. But hey guys is your bikes do what you please to then. My .02
Just got the wheels back from powder coat guy. They turned out fantastic. I took a lot of gold swatches to local dealer who had an SP and matched it up. I think it looks better. The shade is practically spot on and there is just a bit of metallic to it but not too much.
I will send pics of them on bike in next couple of days. Just dropped them off at my mechanic. $200 for the powder coat guy total.

Ok. Here it is. Take my word for it. This is the right gold if you want to powder coat. Turned out perfectly. Just a hint of metallic. I'm very pleased.
