Hello guys! I am going to be starting my first day of racing soon (Oct 1 school/track day combined) and I have a pair of Dainese TR Course "out" boots. I have been doing research and there seems to be so many varying opinions on which boot to get. Seeing that I am a beginner, I want great lateral ankle protection and from what I have learned from researching, Sidi seems to be the favorite for most racers? I do like the ST air but I am a beginner (all the more reason to beef up the protection) and wonder which direction to go? Any help is tremendously appreciated guys!!!
I love my Sidi boots. Everything on it is replaceable and repairable including the soles. The worst you can do if you buy an expensive boot from sidi is get too much protection which isn't the worst thing in the world.
ive been using the alpine stars smx6 boots for the past year. They have good ankle protection, been down twice in them and they're still perfectly good. I plan to do a new racers school next year sometime too, planing to upgrade to smx plus or super tech r. Get what u feel comfortable
In!
Loving my axial pro "ins". A tad pricy but so damn comfortable. Ive been down 3 times this year and they not only protected my foot, they held up really well too. They almost look brand new still.
Sidi looks awesomely protective but I have no personal experience.
Daytona's are the absolute top of the line period, but not everybody can throw $1000+ at a pair of boots. I know I can't...
Sidi's are not far behind in quality, but you sure do pay for them as well even if they are not in the realm of Daytona's they are still damn expensive.
Alpine Stars quality is about 20 steps below Sidi in every way and I have owned multiple pairs of both for decades now so I have experience both old & new. The SMX I have currently I almost never wear as they are just not comfortable even after a couple seasons of use so I went back to an old trusty pair of Oxtars
All my AlpineStars have fallen apart in record time.... While the Sidi's last for like 10 years per pair
My new at the time Biaggi replica's literally had the sole just fall off the fuckin boot while out riding around on the track!
Meanwhile I finally retired a pair of Sidi's that I had bought back in 1997 in 2007 after using them 40-50 events per season even in rain conditions where at the end of the session I would pour the water out of the boot. Hell I even mowed the yard in them once and walked in them all over the USA on Motorcycle Tours.
They were the pair on the left
I replaced them with the pair on the right and didn't like the fit so I switched to Oxtar and have gone through several sets of them now too and STILL have a pair I am using almost every weekend even now!. They are pretty good value as long as you are getting a deal on them. They are not worth MSRP, but they are comfortable and durable. If you can get them cheap or on closeout I highly suggest picking up a set.
Oh & I use these for Street Riding or going to MotoGP, WSBK etc, The looks I get are priceless!
Sidi will last forever. Mine went through at least four or five crashes and then I wore a hole in the soles. Replaced the soles and they are still going.
Sidi are the most comfortable boot I've worn. For track/racing I personally would get a boot with an ankle brace. In Sidi that would be the ST or Vortice - they call it the Vertebra System. The Vortice are fairly expensive, and difficult to get in and out of. Google the boot (or almost any motorcycle gear) and Revzilla usually has a video review about it that will point out the pros and cons.
Personally, even though I don't ride track anymore, I went with the ST for the extra piece of mind. The best prices on gear in the US I've seen is one of the site sponsors, Rider's Discount. I got mine (before I was on this forum) from Chromeburner for $267 shipped free ($395 everywhere else). They are in the Netherlands, so I was a little wary, but I got them in about 10 days and am very happy with them. They have the Vortice for $316 compared to $495.
Note the ST and Vortice come in "Air" versions that are perforated for better airflow. Chromeburner I believe used to list them both in the Air version, but currently I don't see the ST Air on their site.
Chromeburner is great...almost always the best price. I usually go over to sportbike-trackgear to check things out first though...they have videos on a lot of the products.
Try finding a boot within your budget with an exoskeleton to keep your ankle from twisting in a crash. They don't provide as much movement (fine for track/racing though) and can be harder to get in and out of, but the protection has saved me from swollen/broken ankles which was more than worth it. I have been using Puma 1000 V3's for the past few years though and love them.
