Drag race results...

Well.. I went 3 for 6 guys..

This was an 1/8th mile setup with no tree or anything. Its just a girl standing there that flashes a spotlight and you go.

Mind you, this was the FIRST time ever drag racing a motorcycle and launching a bike period. I have done many many races from a slow roll or fast.. (requiring NO launching skills).

I started off racing a KTM 990 superduke twin. He had been drag racing dirtbikes for the last 15 years. Raced him like 4 times.. Couldnt win. I could only get back to about half a bike length behind him as we crossed the line.

I raced 2 gixxer 750s. Both had full yoshi and one was geared down (+2 rear)

I beat both of them.. Geared one by the hair of my nuts!!

Then I beat an RC51 with full yoshi.

My problem is my launch. Slipping the clutch at 4500 was just not cutting it. I was NEVER beating ANYONE out of the hole today. The closest I got to being even with someone was them being 2 bike lengths ahead out of the hole.

I would slip the clutch at about 5000 and try to keep it there until I let the clutch completely out. I found that everyone was beating me until I was able to short shift into 2nd and put the hammer down!

The front end never came up during the clutch slip.

I think I just need to have more guts when it comes to letting that clutch go. Im just so afraid if I let it go too quick Ill end up on my back! $11,000 mistake!

What can I do to become more comfortable launching? I guess just letting the clutch out harder and harder and just trying to know when too much is too much?

Just launch as hard as I can without flipping over?? I just dont have the balls to let that clutch fly!

Help me out! Please!

Can try re-gearing say -1 front , + 1 to 5 rear . Then launch in 2nd gear. No more short shifting if geared right.

Practice , practice , practice , practice, practice & practice.

The more forward the lean of your body the better. Get some rear sets that allow you to move your feet up and back, therefore putting more wait on the tank.

Make sure you have the rear tire pressure down to about 20 lbs as you will probably be losing traction with tire spin if your front end isn't coming up. If it does come up then strap the forks down (Brad has the gear).

Dizing, why are you short shifting if the front wheel is on the ground? Buying rearsets for drag racing is throwing your money away, they will not help you launch or go faster. If your rear tire is hooking up dont let more air pressure out, Launch in 2nd gear? Thats the worst thing you will do, your not riding a dirtbike! Your clutch plates will be toast. Going down one tooth on the front sprocket will help alot, still not the best gearing for drag racing. Letting the clutch out as fast as you can will cause a bog or spin the tire, it takes a balance of throttle and clutch that will carry the front wheel 1-2 inches off the ground in 1st gear while the throttle wide open., the only help that I see is accurate here is practice! Some people think straight line racing is easy, it is very difficult to master, reaction times, 60" times being low, riding skills to put the power to the track, shifting proper, hope this helps. Remember lots of practice is the answer. wee
