Tire size

What is the difference between 180/55 and 190/50? I just bought some 2CTs with 190's... Was that a bad move? Hopefully there is no BIG difference. Help me out... Thanks!

190 is a wider tire than the 180. Litre Bikes come with 190s. 190 will have a bigger contact patch in corners. I don't suggest dropping to 180

So the first number is width, and the second number is the height of the profile as a percentage of the width. Most liter bikes have a 6in rim and it takes to a 190 better that a 180. Most of the 600's have 5.5in rims and the 180 suits them better. Typically people like a taller tire (55 vs. 50) because the profile allows for better turn in in the curves. There are many threads on this if you use the search function, but that should give you a basic idea.

Also... as far as pure size goes.... there isn't a huge difference in the size of the tire. That kind of also depends on the brand. Some of their profiles (that is, the actual shape) are different.

also i'm assuming in your original post you meant 190/55 vs 190/50 size?

as others said, the 180 is more fitting for a 5.5" rim and 600/750 sized bikes (street). the 190 or 200 is more for the 6" rims of a liter bike.

the 55 and 50 are the aspect ratio- basically how tall the sidewall is compared to the width.

the original sizes were 180/55-17 and 190/50-17 but with more power came the need/desire for a bit more bite when leaned over, so they have moved to a 190/55-17 size that will give you a bit more traction leaned over. But if it's for the street or light track day usage, 99% of the people will never tell the difference.

and as someone else pointed out, it's all only relavant to a specific manufacturer. the tolerances can be +/- 10% from the official "spec" of the size from ETRTO so there's a lot of variation from brand to brand.

Does the 190/55/17 have any effect on the speedometer or odometer comparred to the stock 190/55/17 size tire? I just bought an 08' that came with a 55 instead of the stock 50 series.
