Replace piston rings

quick question, is it possible to do the rings without splitting the cases (disregard manual)

Not 100% sure...but, I'm going to say NO. You are going to have to pull the engine, remove the cylinder head and the oil pan. Cracking the case isn't going to be too much more work.

guess a question to the opposing side, can u do rod end bearings without removeing the head?

Sure can. Remove the oil pan and pump, then use a wobbly ratchet extension to reach the connecting rod bolts to get the pistons out.

No way to get con rods/piston out without removing the head.

Not talking about rods/pistons in relation to post #3 only end caps and bearings

Alan, quite right however ended up splitting the case anyway, lucky, couple crank bearing caps knackered also
