History
So lets start the story of Freya.
Back in 2016 after getting back from a deployment I was on the hunt for another motorcycle. Having previously owned a 2003 CBR 954RR I knew I wanted a CBR 1000RR. But what year was the question. I never liked the 05-07 body style so that was out of the question, then was the 2012-2016 model. I absolutely loved them, the sleekness, headlights, everything about it. Only one problem..... I couldn't find one I liked in the Phoenix area. Then I came across an ad on Craigslist for a 2008 CBR 1000RR. It had roughly 18,000 miles on the stock motor, and multiple tasteless modifications. The matte black eBay fairing kit was falling apart (Literally lost the right side somewhere on the 17). Then there was the VooDoo shorty exhaust, fading paint, and extremely loud. Not to mention the extremely high quality (kidding) eBay black shorty levers. The worst part was the Driven Racing 7 degree clipons that hit everytime you turned (this was literally awful). This bike was falling apart, but when I met the seller at a QuikTrip gas station I knew that was the bike that I was going to put in the back of my truck and drive it back to Commifornia. I did a quick test ride around the neighborhood and fell in love. We went to the bank and I loaded it in the back of my truck and left for California.
I pulled in my driveway, put the ramp on the tailgate and brought down Freya to her new home. Over the next few days I went over the bike seeing what needed done. Even though it had alot of bad, there was some good. The VooDoo Adjustable Rearsets felt great, lots of adjustability and not to mention they look great. It had HEL Performance Steel Braided Brake Lines on the front and rear, a MotionPro REV2 Quick Turn Throttle and No-Cut Frame Slides. Honestly the bad out weighed the good on this bike. But I got a great deal on it. I rode it this way for roughly 5 months. It rode great and fell in love with it even more.
Early in 2017 I knew it was time to finally take this bike apart and make it my own.
First thing I needed was Fairings. I searched everywhere. I didn't like any of the OEM color schemes, and I knew if I was making this bike for me, I wanted something different. I went website to website looking for info on who made the best kit. Then someone mentioned Auctmarts.com. I checked out their website and knew I was going with them. Decent price, good reviews and custom paint at the same cost of prepainted kits. At first I thought I wanted to do a full murdered out look, all black everything. I had my custom matte black paint picked out with the guys over at auctmarts and everything. Then it hit me, everyone and their mothers have all black bikes. So I knew I needed some color, after talking to the guys at auctmarts they showed me the one I currently have which was ready to ship. It was shipped out the next day and on my doorstep 3 weeks later.
Second, I knew I wanted a different windscreen. It had the cheap one you get with eBay fairings. I'm 6' so I needed a tall windscreen to keep most of the wind off of my helmet. I looked and looked, there are so many to choose from. I saw the Zero Gravity Corsa windscreen on a bike on Youtube and knew that was the one I had to have. I ordered that from RevZilla and had it a few days later.
Now that I had everything I needed (or thought I needed) I tore the bike apart and started installing everything. Surprisingly the fairing kit was a breeze to install. This took me about a week of working on it after work then Saturday and Sunday. Man was I happy when I finished it.It looked amazing, I was in love. I knew it needed more but I was content. I rode it this way for roughly 4 months.
Freya now had about 20,000 miles, and it was time to get some more goodies. The guy I bought the bike from gave me a box of stuff for the bike. In the box was a Power Commander V (why I didn't install this earlier... who knows). So I knew that was going in. The bike had different sprockets, so the speedometer was off, I knew I wanted to correct this problem but didnt know how. That when I came across a company called HealTech. They make all kinds of neat electronic bits for motorcycles. During this time I also want to change the LEDs in the gauge cluster because some of them were already out, so I picked up some blue LEDs and got to work. I picked up my SpeeedoHealer for about 100 bucks. The subframe was starting to fade and I knew I would be mad at myself if I didn't do something about it. I found a local powdercoating business and took them the subframe and rear passenger pegs to get powdercoated in a Matte Black. I got them back 3 or 4 days later and damn did they look good. I also got the speedohealer around that time, so it was time to install. This only took me a Saturday and a few beers. Even though it was a few small things, that powdercoat looked great and the bike looked better than ever. I was ecstatic. I thought that was it, that's how it's going to be until she dies.
I rode this thing everywhere. Rode up to Neptunes Net, hit the canyons every weekend, this bike was great. Then out of nowhere I started seeing alot of smoke coming from the exhaust after starting from a stop (stop sign, stoplight, etc.). I pulled the airbox and the valves in the 4th cylinder were soaked in oil. So bad valve seals, now the question was do I pull the head and take it to some one to get a rebuild or do I get a new motor. I sat on this question for about 2 months, looking for motors on eBay, calling shops to get quotes on a rebuild etc. Then I found it! A 2012 motor, low miles, and a great price. I knew I wanted to go this route because the 08-10 motors are flawed from the factory. The most common issue is oil making it past the oil ring on the piston and getting into the combustion chamber causing it to burn oil, some more than others. I knew this wasn't my problem but I didnt want to risk it. Also you get the gear indicator on the 2012-2016 motors, but you do need the gauge cluster and harness. But lucky for me, the motor I found had everything, and when I say everything, I mean everything. It was Titled "2012 CBR1000RR Motor Buggy Ready" on eBay. It had the motor, harness, gauge cluster, full exhaust, radiator, airbox, fuel tank and Ecu. You could literally mount this up on a piece of plywood with wheels and it would run. Man I knew I found a great deal, so I called the company, that was in Florida and talked to them about, asking them if they knew for sure if it ran etc. They said they ran it before stripping it. I was satisfied so I purchased it. About a week later the semi truck arrived with my motor. He pulled it out of the back and put it in my garage. It was time.
Over the next week I had Freya fully disassembled. Now that it was fully apart I knew I had to do everything I wanted to. The frame and swingarm were fading like the subframe was, so I took them to the same powdercoater. They did not disappoint, this thing looked brand new! Next were the OEM parts that were missing, damaged or just plain ugly. First of all I needed a new battery tray, the old one had multiple holes from cheap license plate brackets, paint was peeling, and multiple broken plastic pieces. I also needed a chain guard, the chain slider, OEM Honda tank badges, rear brakeline holder, new brake caliper seals and multiple small parts. I ordered all of this from PartZilla. They had everything I needed in stock and it arrived at my doorstep 4 days later. With just the frame and swingarm together I knew this was going to be something special.
During the time of me putting my bike back together, my buddy ran his 12 CBR1000RR out of oil and needed a new motor. So he bought one from eBay and it was at my doorstep. I wanted, no, needed 12 -16 wheels for Freya. I love the multispoke wheels that 12-16 has, and not a big fan of the tri spoke that came on the 08-11. So thats what I charged him to replace the motor, his wheels.
I also got a few other parts from him that he wasnt going to use anymore.
Back to Freya. Over the next few weeks I got her all back together, and wow...... did she look amazing. I just couldn't believe it. It was like a brand new bike, but better, because I built it. Everything feels better when you know you're the one who did it. Unfortunately the PC V is different for the 08-11 and the 12-16. Now I only needed a few more parts before she could be completely finished. I needed an undertail, I didn't like the Hotbodies one at all. So i found a TaylorMade Carbon Fiber Undertail for sale locally and picked it up that day. I also needed to do chain and sprockets, I didnt know if I wanted to change the ratio or go back to OEM teeth count. I ended up going the OEM route. Now the last thing I needed was OEM clip-ons. I looked everywhere!! Nobody had them or people wanted an arm and a leg for them. So I made a post on one of the local motorcycle Facebook pages asking if anybody had a set, and by a miracle I get a message, all he wanted to do was trade my Driven Racing clip ons for his OEM one, DEAL! Now I had everything I needed to finish this bike. It felt like an eternity before the bike was back together, but it got there. It was finally finished. I was happy, and in love with this bike.
Fast forward a few months. After riding it everyday, getting complements everywhere I went, I knew it was time to part with her. Time to move on to something different, maybe a 2017 1KRR. But I have not thought that far ahead yet. On to a new project. As I'm typing this I am talking to the buyer of it, and man is it heart breaking. But I am looking forward to something different, something new. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing this.
And that is the story of Freya
