08 gearing change opinions

hey crew just after your opinions and thoughts on gearing changes for the 08. i am still running the standard 16/42 set up but the time has come to go in search of a little more bottom end/mid range pull. so i was wondering what you lot are running and how you find the combo you decided on. my thinking is -1 in the front on 530 pitch is it enough for what i am after, the full 520 -1+2 set up courtesy of lexus...have not ran 520 before is it a noticable difference. with the mumbo the 08 has already was thinking the -1 in front could be sufficient...thanks in advance for your reply:th_salute:

Run the -1/+2, youre gonna run into chain lengtth issues. You can run a 15t and a 43, 44, 45 but not 42--if you cut your chain for the 42--you wont have enough chain for the bigger more desirable ,43, 44 and 45
I run a -1 on mine and like the change for sure.
Another vote for -1 on the front.. Anymore than this you will not be able to keep the front tire on the ground.... :)

is -1 in the front = to +2 or 3 in the rear?
-1/+3 and will never go back. Love it.

I actually haven't even put them on yet :th_SmlyROFL:

I have a driven/ek 520 kit (black on black) sitting on the floor just waiting to be installed. I have just been waiting to borrow a chain tool. I think it is better to have waited anyway after installing a bunch of parts last week. It may have been a little too much on the first ride if I did everything at once.

This is what just went on (with the exception of the gearing and one grip cause I got lazy), flapper mod done as well.

What, did I break something already? :th_SmlyROFL:
+2 on the rear works great for me, only coz i wanted a black rear sprocket, otherwise i would have went -1 front....
when you guys do the 520, do you have to get a speedo healer too?
Sorry for the elementary questions.

-1/+2 Means 1 less tooth in the front and 2 more teeth on the rear sprocket ?

What does 520 mean ?

If anyone knows off the top of their heads, whats the teeth count on the stock 08 cbr1krr sprocket now ?

Is -1/+2 geared for more low/mid range acceleration boost ?

Thanks for your help

(Also will I need to order a new chain if I get a new sprocket setup ?)

The speedohealer is good even if you stay with stock gearing. From what many members have reported, the speedo is off by about 6-7%. So even if you did a 520 conversion keeping stock gearing, you would still be off by that 6-7%. I've only seen one member report that their speedo was accurate from the factory. Mine was off by 6.7%.

Yes, -1/+2 means 1 less tooth on the front and 2 extra teeth on the rear.

520 is the chain pitch. Stock chains are 530. Switching to a 520 saves you weight as the 520 is a lighter chain. But, you must remember that the sprockets and chain all have to be the same, either they are all 530 or they are all 520. You can't just use your stock 530 gears with a 520 chain or vice-versa.

Stock gearing is 16/42.

With the change, you will increase your acceleration but lose top-end. But, how often are you truly going 180mph down the road.

Look in the FAQ for 2008+ models for the link to a gearing calculator for our bikes to see how much of the top speed you will lose.

So, this would make sense then right...
Front sprocket : 520 setup : 15 tooth

Rear sprocket, +2 teeth, 44 teeth

Then I'd have to get a 520 chain
Can I get just any 520 chain ? What do you recommend ?

Thanks

What do you recommend ?
Get a 520 swap kit (f/r sprocket and chain) from one of the site sponsers. If you don't have a chain tool and you plan on doing the install yourself, get one.

PM or call lexus rx or LDH. Either of them will hook you up. I know both have had kits on sale fairly recently. Look in the sponsor sections in Superbike Supply (lexus rx) and Kyle Racing (LDH) for their info and specials.

Oh, and here is some more info on gearing from LDH:
