Just returning from a cruise down to Cozumel, I brought back an experience worth a good laugh, and $100.
While in Cozumel after we returned to the pier from our excursion, my girlfriend and I decided to take a trip downtown so she could hit all the shopping centers. As we were aproaching the place to grab a taxi, I see a sign advertising scooters for rent. Being the 2wheel enthusiust I am, I convinced her this would be a much better experience than a taxi. It was $35 to rent a Honda scooter, and out of a $100 bill, the other $65 would be my deposit. I decided fair enough, so off we went. After spending a few hours shopping it was time to head back to get on the ship. So we load up and go to take off only to find out the back tire was completely flat. Of course there was no were to get air. I knew I had to get the bike back or I wouldn't get my deposit back. With little time left to get back on the ship I decided to put my girlfriend in a cab and I told her I would meet her at the pier. She was freaking out but I assured her I would be right behind her. After getting her on her way, off I go. And I'm sure any of you that have ever ridden a bike with a flat knew how my trip was, kinda scary. So with cars blasting around me and everyone and their dog yelling at me that I had a flat, I made the uneasy trip back to the rental station. As I pulled up the guy came running out yelling for me to park the bike, my girlfriend right behind him. As he approached me he ask what happened and told me I should not have rode it back like this, immediately grabbing the keys from me. At this point I was boiling. Thinking to myself that some local sees two american people hope off a moped that they know I rented decides to play a prank and let the air out of my tire, or that the rental guy con'd me renting me a bike with a leaky tire. I reminded him that I either leave the bike in town for him to find or I return it to him, I had no time to take 3 or 4 trips back and forth. As an arguement sparks up he reminds me that I have to pay for damages. By this point every other word coming out of my mouth were not words you use with ur mother. As I stood over him only about maybe an inch from his face demanding that he give me my things out from under the seat and return my $65, he makes a break for it headed toward the local atthorities standing on the street. My girlfriend now reminding me "oh shit Justin, ur about to go to Mexican jail." Taking a second to think about this, I called the guy back over and offered him the $100 that I had given him to cover the rental and the damages. He agreed to my offer and I made him shake on it, followed by a "fuck u motherfucker." We made our way back to the ship. I dont know if I had ever been that mad. We later laughed about the experiece. So if you ever decided to take a moped in Mexico, I'd be careful.
i was told never to rent any kind of car or scooter in mexico. those mexicans can be crooked. the police will pull you over and basically hold you until you give them money. once i got caught over there by the police for trespassing. i gave them 20 bucks and they let me go.
