Break-In Procedure

I noticed a lot of posts in another thread regarding break-in so I thought I'd start a thread on it.

Personally, I take it easy on my bike the first 200 miles. I vary the RPMs while riding being careful not to stay around any one RPM range for too long. I also don't break 7,000 RPMs the first 200 miles and I'm easy on the brakes as well. I also do a lot of short trips to get plenty of heat cycles into th engine. Run to operating temp, cool down, run to operating temp, cool down, etc. After 200 miles I start to ride the bike a little harder, but never hit redline. I do this procedure for about 200 miles again varying RPMs quite a bit. For the third phase I ride the bike pretty hard, hitting the redline a few times, but never bouncing it off the rev limiter. That takes it up to 600 miles.

At 600 miles I change the oil and filter.

Lord Duckhunter has a good "How To" on breaking in bikes at:

ok my dealer told me to break in like the handbook says, my friend who sold the bike to me told me to ride it like i hated it.

its hard for me to think that punishing a brand new motor is a good thing, but at the same time i didnt like waiting.

so i ended up running it to 10K every so often, and ended up with 600 miles in about 3 weeks and atleast 15-20 rides.

what do you think, good/bad/ok?

you will be fine. these newer engines don't take nearly as much to break in as they used to and we pretty much run the crap out of ours right after a build and just use the parts manufacturers recomendations. so far so good
