Fork preload adjuster: half turn acceptable?

adjust the damn thing till it feels right FOR YOU.
if the top out spring is compressed all the way, all its going to do is make the main spring do what theyre supposed to do. Now if youre too heavy for those main spring, you risk bottoming out, and that can make you wreck.

You see, when you send off your Honda forks to get upgraded, to something less than cartridges, they will take out that topout spring and put a buffer in there, the material varies, but think of it as removing a 2nd spring and adding a bump stop. so ultimately you have less suspension travel, but then in that case, your fork is set for your weight, as well as valving and all, so no issue there. The issue MAY show itself if you weigh like 250lbs, because youre gonna overpower those stock springs easily, and run straight into the bump stop. That tends to be bad for traction.

but yes, 1/2 a turn on your sh1t is fine if thats the desired effect YOU want, just as long as its in a "click" because if its not, it will move under the load and vibration.

I watched the Dave Moss video about top out springs and his explanation about what they do and why they are there, and as far as I understood, unless you're regularly doing wheelies, the top out spring isn't doing much. Have I misunderstood?

I understand your explanation about softer top out spring being compressed when adding preload, but if the above is true, what does it matter? And how does that increase crash potential?
exactly, all it does is mess up your "spring rate" since its 2 springs and there really isnt no way to predict if one will make a full range of motion and stop before the other one does.
Thats why most suspension tuners toss em out. because say you have a 10.5n/mm spring in there, and you leave the top out spring, will the top put spring being weaker compress all the way before the main one moves, will they move together, will the main compress 1st, there's no way to know. top out springs are suspension tuners nightmare, most toss em out, and as far as ive read and been told, only Honda does em on sportbikes.
