Unfortunately I cannot find a single source that says if turning the fork preload adjuster half a turn is acceptable. If I go a full turn soft I'm over 38mm (or a number that is < 89mm from the bottom of the dust seal to the the bottom part of the fork tube) and vice versa. If I turn it harder/clockwise I'm under 38mm (or > than 89mm).
There are no "clicks" like the rebound and compression adjusters, so I'm assuming this wouldn't be an issue, but it never hurts to ask before I could potentially bork something up.
