Yes, flipping the shift rod accomplishes the task... but you will need to cut/modify the sprocket cover, or remove it entirely (not recommended by some).
A stock sprocket cover is like $15.00 from RevZilla. Get one and hack it up. Who knows, you may find some hidden finesse. Also, there are a few threads in here that illustrate where to cut pretty well.
