Can anyone confirm that the key code is on the ignition before I take it apart? I lost my key I'm the second owner so I didn't get a spare or the key code tab. Yes I search before I started this thread. Anyways I went to the dealer with the title they said they couldn't make a key off the vin number. Checked with a locksmith they want 100 to 150 bucks an my bike for a few hours.

Yep sure is, I just did mine
I ordered spare keys ($40) for my Harley direct from the factory with the VIN. I'm surprised Honda doesn't do this.
Just to let everybody know the key code is on the side of the ignition. If you turn the steering all the way to the left. With a good flash light and a magnifying glass you dont even need to take anything apart you can see the key code. Got my replacement keys today.

Thanks for the reply.

Just a note to give my appreciation for this thread.

Like member Camman, I also am the second owner of my bike, getting my 2007 as a bank repo, away from the original owner. When I got the bike, there was no second key, and also no original owner documentation; which 'supposedly' would have had some paperwork with the code information somewhere.

Unfortunately went down on the bike last week, and must have dropped the key somewhere in the confusion afterward...

This really helps on the replacement cost. I had also been told that there might be a $200 cost involved for a locksmith.

I have to unfortunately as what may be a dumb question though....
The replacement keys that you guys got, do you have to get them from Honda, or can a locksmith use this code with some known information from Honda key-making?

I didn't get a 2nd key when I bought my 08 off the original owner. It is supposed to have encoded keys, which a locksmith confirmed via a key book (don't ask me). I asked them to copy a key anwyays to give it a try, works like a charm, been using the the plain duplicate for 1.5 years now. $4 well spent.
Smergy, thanks for that input, but our problem here, is not having a key to begin with, to copy...
Placed my order for the replacement key yesterday.
Hope to be able to add another confirmation by the end of next week, that this code on the side of the ignition truly works.

Well, this is completely false, as I found out yesterday.

As indicated in my post earlier, ordered my blank key, which came in this week.
Tried to get the key made with this three-digit code on the side of the ignition, and it's inaccurate.

My three-digit code, on the side of my ignition, is a number and two letters.
When I got to the dealership, they said that the code has to be a letter and two numbers.

...I love wasting my time! Thanks!!!

Thanks bro, got your PM.
I'll check out that alternate location, and let you know if I find that code.

There's three threads going on this subject, so here what ended up happening for me -
Original selling dealer came through like a champ.
They had the original key code documented, and just made me supply a copy of the Title and Bill Of Sale.
Got a new key made today, and it works! Wahoo, I'm fixed!

So, if you don't have the original code, don't give up and waste money with buying a whole new ignition setup.
Call Honda, find out what dealer first sold the bike, and see if the they can give you the code...
Camman, sorry bro, but could not find this code you mentioned.
Am all-good now though, so no worries further!
Hope you have a great 2012 riding season.
saved my life mine is one number two letters its an 09

i lost my key on my 954, and i had pop-a-lock make one, 140, but i was back riding!
Why didn't any of you have spare keys made when you first got your bikes? Dumb mistake. I got my 06 used and it came with only one key, and simple common sense told me to take it to a locksmith and for 4 bucks they made 2 copies. I've been using one of the copies ever since.

Went through and read all this hopefully this gives me hope on getting my bike back running.
I tore the house apart last night looking everywhere for my key... I had two but one was cracked so bad it broke in half and the good one is missing somewhere in my house! So i called the dealer because I do have the tab with the code and they said they can't order a precut key anymore that manufactuers are steering away from that.... So I need to buy a new blank and have one cut from the code by a locksmith... Will be calling a lock smith soon to see if they can help ... Im tempted to see if they can cut one from the cracked key I have ....
