Maintenance cost question

Need your opinion on a maintenance quote I got. Took my 2005 to a local mechanic that came highly recommended. Got a quote for $720 to do the following and curious if you all think it's reasonable. I'm in Orange County, CA.

Change front and rear brake fluids
Change and flush coolant
Change clutch fluid
Install K & N air filters
Replace chain and sprockets (using a nice kit)
Throttle sync.

Thoughts?

You could spend $400 in parts and do it yourself .
Depends on how much you value your time. I've always found it relaxing performing vehicle maintenance (bike and truck). That knowledge is good in a pinch, too, if you ever need to call on it while out and about.

Seems reasonable, especially if that includes parts.

Yeah, that's out the door. Parts, labor, and tax
Have you ever worked on motorcycles or cars before?

Shop rates can vary $50-$100/hour. Add in parts and it sounds about right.

Yes I have, but I don't really have the facilities or the tools currently to work on a motorcycle. I also work 60 hours a week and would rather spend my free time doing other things. I am without a doubt sure I'd save money doing it myself. The purpose of this post was to get feedback on the quote I received to make sure it was accurate. That's all. Thanks.

I totally understand working long hours and not having tools or a place to work on a bike, I wasn't trying to insult you by any means.

it sounds about right for a shop rate. A bit on the higher end, but not out in left field.

1 cotainer of dot4 syntetic brake fluid $20 , takes care of clutch, and brakes .
K&N filter I have set I'll sell ya $45 Shipped .
520 Kit from super bike Supply is ~155
Chain breaker/rivet tool is ~100
You dont need your throttle synced.

So 300 in parts -
Time
Changing those fluids is easy , and should take about 10min per res .
Filters maybe 2 hours if your completely inept, but I'd say 1 hours is average .
Chain and sprockets - Grind old rivet and break old chain - 10 minutes .
Pull cover and remove front sprocket and replace - 20 min
removed rear sproket nuts, rear wheal and install new sprocket , 30 min .
Cut new chain to length and install 30 min .

So 3 hours .
Yes that shop is taking you for a ride.
If you brought all the parts to me I would charge you $100 to do that work .
What I would advise , find someone on the board local to you , buy them beer , watch and learn.

What is a "throttle sync" ?
When they align all the butterflies in the throttle bodies, so they all open precisely even.
Hey Rotten, im local ish to you. Can you dyno mine? Haha...

Also prev post. Its not align the butterfly valves, but instead adjusting screws on TB assy, kinda like idle mixture screws on old carb. Just to equalize throttle assy vacuum on each cyls. Me think.

Exactly. I was just giving the simplified answer.

Not sure if it was the idle mixture screw that was used to sync up the old carb set ups.

Shop labor rates are a bitch. Do it yourself.

In most cases the guys who work in a shop would do the work for you on the side. So, if I were you, just go watch the mechanic at a shop and ask one of them if they want to make some money on the side and I am pretty sure they will say yes. Well, that's how got my mechanic. Hope that helps...
You have about 300 to 350$ in parts.
So if you wanna save 350$ you can do it for about 3-4 hours
There is a lot of "shoulds" in these time estimates. I would say if you do it yourself just be prepared. Figure out what tools you will need, the procedure for each service, and the order you should do it in. Familiarize yourself with the procedures as well. I have manuals for all of my vehicles and they pay for themselves. I guess it depends on what you need to do with your time. Where I am right now, there is no way could spend 4 hours on anything I needed done. In a few months though... sure, no problem.
I would do all that work myself, and I would spread it out over a weeks time period.
I would maybe do ONE thing a day. Just take my time.

You don't have to do all that stuff on the list at the same time!
