max sprocket combination?

I did some searching first and couldn't find much. I'm taking a new job that's 40 miles one way. I want to max out my sprockets for best highway milage. I'm not an agressive rider so I don't care about losing the launch power. I already have a 17 tooth for the front, so what's the smallest rear I can get without having to modify the stock chain length? Thanks
