But, as we suspected at the Yamaha’s intro, this new motor is lacking a bit of the old bike’s revvy surge up top, peaking with just 146.1 hp at 11,800 rpm
Its common knowledge now that the US Spec Yamaha 09 R1 has the top end nuetered with the "fly by wire" throttle closing down from 100% open to 75% open from 11,500-13750 RPM's killing power, even though the rider has the throttle held wide open. Youtube videos of it are Uglee when that is happening on a dyno.
I almost bought one. 2 test rides later I decided that with the top end nuetering, more vibrations than owners will ever admitt to, very fat up front aeros, that this was not the bike for me. I like to ride at Maxton twice a year and the poor aeros and nuetered top end would make that bike a poor performer from 150-up MPH.

I can care less who they picked as the winner, look at that midrange! It would probably make the same or more hp as the ninja and gixxer if it was unrestricted. And as always best fit and finish!

looks like i made the right choice buying a left over 08
I can't imagine Honda's stake in motorcycle.com affecting the outcome of the test since they used a top-end restricted bike in the test. If they were really trying to sway the test in their favor, they would have used a factory unrestricted bike or put a Z-bomb on it so the hp didn't fall on its face above 10k.
Either way, great review of all the bikes. I can definitely vouch for the "grin factor" on the '08!

No suprise. If the shootout results are off, its not by much. I made sure I was specific in the survey they sent on what i felt Honda needed. Lol but the most accurate thing i heard off this was how close they are.
Its funny to hear that people dont like the looks of the R1. Reminds me of when the 08 blade came out. I think its funny that people think the blade is so sexy now. I always thought it was.

i like my cbr.. and i was thinking that with all this yamaha hype going around.. i have an 06 R6.. and that 17500 rpm tach.. well you all know.i figured that R1 might be a lot of hype as well.this shotout states some similar opinions as i made after having the 09 R1 for a ferw hours.. pretty nice bike feels fast.. but my cbr midrange feels stronger and easier..or smoother?? just got my cbr back after a ring job which honda approved.. bike has 450 miles since ring job and feels AWESOME.. love my HONDA...:th_salute:

The way I see the shoot outs that's been done so far is that they seam to differ a lot and I actually think that is because the bikes are closer than ever in overall performance and it is more down to the testers presonal preference and other circumstances. Previously I think it was much easier to pick a clear winner i.e the Gixxer K2 and K5 and last years Blade. Those bikes had some clear advantages over the rest of the field.
Not surprised to see the Blade come out on top again, but surprised to see the R1 going from being hailed to be being almost bashed.
