theres a ton of write ups on this subject use the search button and you will find all of them and be able to decide what you need to do...
Just change it. That way you'll know exactly when you changed it and when it needs to be changed next.
The manual says every 8,000 but I'll bet no one waits that long. I do every 4,000, but, I would also do what Justin said.
i changed mine at 200 and 900......the 900 change was nothin like the 200 change.....the 200 oil seemed like it was toast!
Hah, I'm pretty bad with oil changes. I don't keep track of when I do them. I just kind of do them arbitrarily when I run out of other things to do, but I'm sure I go 4000-8000 miles between changing my oil. It's never caused any problems tho. Your bike is still new and has low mileage but go ahead and do your oil change now so you know when you did it and can go from there.
That oil has been in that bike over 4yrs. I'd change it right away.

I just read that too. how the hell does a 2004 have less then 3,000 miles? I've done that in a few weeks before... Do an oil change, you got old oil which I'm sure has broken down a bit. For all you know that oil is 5 years old.
just take a sample and send it out for analysis.. when you get the results they will let you know if it needs changed or not.

or you could just change it
I also just bought a 2004 CBR1000 and it only has 1502 miles on it!! Good? Bad? Who cares, I bought it for $4000 and it looks like brand new!
