RR4 Strange Temp Issue

557 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  87013sz
Good morning all

As I mentioned in my previous posts I have completely rebuilt a beautiful 2004 CBR1000RR. The past 2 weeks I finally had sometime to ride it and I noticed a very very strange issue with the coolant temperature

When I'm just using the dipped beam, I get a reading of temperature, example 109°C (when in traffic). When I switch on the full high beam the reading shows around 5-7°C higher, example 115°C. If I turn off full beam it goes back to 109°C

The gauge cluster is aftermarket not OEM, but I kinda ruled that out as a guy on facebook has a similar problem with the OEM cluster

I'm guessing it's a ground issue. But which ground should I tackle? I will probabluly start with the ground wires that are fixed to the frame, give them a good clean and see what happens

Since I couldn't upload a video, I took pictures with high beam off and on, each given 5 seconds intervals

Anyone else had a similar issue?

Thanks in advance

The temperature sensor output varies by the supply voltage. When you turn on the high beam, you draw 5A more current from the battery and that causes the reading to change because the battery voltage goes down.

Does it do this with the bike running? What type of battery are you using?

The bike was off when I did the testing. However, I have ridden the bike with the high beam on and noticed the temp being higher than normal, and it was the first time I went for a ride with high beams on

Battery is a brand new Motobatt, never had issues with Motobatts

I forgot to mention that I have a full Akrapovic Evo Ti exhaust and a PC3. Quite possibly it's running on the hot side as it's lean on idle (didn't mess with the fueling yet) and the Akra headers do sit super close to the radiator, so quite possibly could be the reason

The coolant doesn't boil or piss out the overflow tank like many others mention when their Blade overheats, so I don't think it's that big of a deal

It is also safe to say that the head gasket is still intact as the oil is still clear and no smoke coming out the exhaust

The only thing that annoys me is the fan comes on at 115°C and it does not allow it to rise anymore. Once I get moving, it drops down instantly
