Titanium bolt weight

17825 Views 288 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  Rusa
Don't know if anyone is interested but I just received my Front caliper Titanium bolts and weighed them vs stock steel for a 17 SP. Titanium is 24 grams vs stock steel 33 grams. So a reduction of 44 grams or 1.5 oz. Not much but then I am going for corrosion resistance and shine (bling).
I will be receiving front and rear rotor bolts and sprocket nuts in Titanium and will post their weights.

Now if I can just get accurate weight of the stock SP rims with bearing only then I can decide if I want the Marchesini Magnesium wheels. :)

I finished updating the drawings with all the specs. The Machine shop did not change the pricing so in quantity of 5, one front axle, one rear axle, and one swingarm pivot bolt set, with shipping and duty fees is $800. Any left over will be refunded, very slight over cost will be ignored, extra cost (probably minor) will be passed on. So I am ready to order and need a real count. Who is in?

John, I last saw these numbers here:

Front Axle 1 - $250, 5 - $151, 10 - $112
Swingarm pivot bolt 1 - $450, 5 - $280, 10 - $225
I planned on ordering one axle, both axles if I can afford it.
I didn’t have a plan for swingarm pivot bolts.
I didn’t understand the pivot bolts were mandatory to make the order happen.
I apologize but $800 is not an option for me at this moment. But if I can order one or both axles, I am still totally in.
If it’s similar to these prices here.

I’m in.
So, ordering individual pieces would change the pricing unless we have 5 for whichever parts, ordering all pieces in a set is not mandatory. After everyone says what they want then I can go back for pricing on lesser amounts. But looking at the 1 piece vs 5 pricing, you might be paying the same money for fewer pieces unless we have a want for 5 of a part, we will just have to see. I want a full set but will pay higher amounts to get them.
And from post 219 you see the rear axle pricing:
Rear Axles 1 - $400, 5 - $270, 10 - 216.67
Steering stem 1- $300, 5 - $135, 10 - $112.50

Appreciate you doing all this. A couple notes:

Might be a good idea to post this in a more general forum as a group buy to see if more people are interested. Could get the cost down more and hit the minimum 5 count for all parts.

I'm still interested but need to wait a bit until I find I job. I was one of the many tech bros laid off in the last few months. 😔
Ok, I will see if I can find where to post.
Sorry to here about your layoff, my company is Biotech and they announced a possible RIF(reduction in force) in Q3, so we will see what happens.

The swingarm pivot bolt is the largest steel bolt on the bike, good for a lot of weight loss. The rear axle next, a close second.

So I am thinking that the steel bushings through the bearings of the rear suspension dog bone are a good candidate for Titanium replacements at 44 grams each it should be good for an ounce or two of weight savings. I am already paying for shipping on the other parts so can add these in for peanuts. I am going to do a drawing and send it over for pricing.
Anything else that is small that can easily be done in Titanium?

And drawing done and sent.

Received the quote for the rear suspension dog bone bushing in grade 5 titanium. Weight lost is approximately 3/4 ounce per bushing.
Price is Each in quantity 2 - $50, 6 - $25, 10 - $20.
So if three people are interested, It would be $50 for a set of two, for 1 1/2 ounce lost. Not bad considering I paid $480 for a 2 ounce loss with the upper triple clamp steering head, but then it is billet and stronger than the stock one. Also found the nut for the top of the triple clamp in aluminum at ProBolt, M33x1.0 Nut, Gold anodized (other colors available). Should be here Friday. :)

@John Harris
did you say you’d already ordered the titanium axles and pivot bolts?
Today I actually added weight to my bike.
“Good weight” it’s called, when it’s necessary and serves an important purpose.
Having upgraded my clip-ons, grips and everything else in the controls section of my bike, I no longer had the internal or bar-end weights. They serve a crucial function for me, helping eliminate arm pump and numbness on the freeway. So I had these fabricated out of stainless steel.
I kinda love the look.

I haven't ordered anything yet. I need each person that is interested to tell me which pieces you want, Front Axle, Rear Axle, Swingarm Pivot bolt, suspension link bushings.
Once I have a count of each I can get updated pricing if less than 5 pieces of each.

I am going with the full set myself. The bushings for the suspension link don't loose a lot of weight but with the Dog Bone modification it is 2 ounces, 1/8 pound. And anyone who buys the bushings can send me their link priority mail and I will modify it free of charge, brush finish, clear coat, and return priority mail, then it wouldn't oxidize, and will look better. And the bushing are only another $50 a pair. How is that for a sales pitch? ;)
And if you haven't done it already, get the titanium front axle bolt, rear axle nut, and pivot bolt nut for even more weight savings.
Yeah, I’ll take the full set. I’ll do my own dogbone link.

My Nuts and Bolts from Pro-Bolt came today. The steering head nut on the bike acted as if magnetic, once removed I found it to be aluminum, so silver off and gold on, both weighed 17 grams. The gold goes well with the black Bonomici upper triple clamp. So with the nut off I found the magnetic area was the stem itself, which is interesting as the newer steering stem, 2018 or 2019, is stainless, mine is Steel, that's what happens when you buy the first year of a new model. :)
The aluminum fairing bolts replace the 2 gram per bolt stainless steel bolts with 1 gram each, so more than a half ounce of weight loss. Not much weight loss but the aluminum M5x0.8 bolts are cheap. :)

I love Pro Bolt. I have a lot of their products on two of my motorcycles and David is always great to deal with.
those hardware upgrades you’re talking about are some of the very first ones I did on my CBR, John.
you can see some of them if you zoom in.
