can I pull out the flapper doors from the front also without taking apart anything? thx
That's how they come out anyway, whether you remove the fairings or not. You just have to be careful when you pop the flappers off the hinges. They tend to shoot toward the airbox and then you'll have to remove additional things to get to them.

I just did this mod yesterday. I took the fairings off, so it didn't matter to me which way the flappers went when I pried them loose. I removed the tension spring and I figured the doors would just sit there when I pried them off. However, it was like a magnet was pulling them when I popped them off and they shot further down the air duct. Be careful.

BTW, if anyone else is looking for what to plug the diaphragm holes with I bought a 'Homer Bucket' lid from Home Depot for 98-cents. It is sturdy, black plastic. I cut two circles slightly smaller than 2 inches out of it and Super Glued them to the holes. Looks pretty good.

I started reading the first 10 pgs. Out of 53 so I do not know if anybody just saw the flappers off and leave every thing else alone!

There are a few posts in the thread about taking a long shaft screwdriver (don't use a saw) and popping the flappers off the hinges without removing any fairings. That way, if you don't want to remove the mid fairings for whatever reason you could still remove the flappers.

You have to be careful because when you pop the flapper loose it tends to shoot toward the air cleaner and then you'd have to remove the mid fairing to get it out. Don't forget to extract the diaphragm spring if you use this method.

Most people who do the intake flapper mod do it to make room for ballasts for an aftermarket HID light kit and so they also remove the canister and related vacuum lines and wiring.

Just a quick question.

when you put the ballests where the flaps are ment to be after the flapper mod are you saying they are just putting inside the air tube?

coz i have put hids on my bike and i had to mount my ballests under my rear seat and its a headf*** to do

im gonna be redoing my lights so if you tell me how to mount them in the air tube it woul d be great or if you had a pic? or a link to a thread that has done so?

The ballasts go where the vacuum canister was, not in the "air tube". It's in the top right of this photo:

So I tried doing this mod last night and took me forever to get that damn spring out! But iv finally got it lol

I only need to remove the springs and silver diaphragm? (I think that's what it's called)

You also need to remove the flappers. After you remove the diaphragms you need to cap the holes where they were.

Are you doing this with the mid fairings on or off? If you took them off you should also remove the canister, the two wire harnesses that plug into the diaphragms and all related vacuum lines. Plug the main vacuum line that goes back to the airbox so you don't get a vacuum leak.

I did it with out removing the fairing coz i have no clue how to get them off?

i can remove the head but thats about it lol

any threads about getting the actual flaps out?

There are a few posts within the 30+ pages of this thread on how to do it. It involves using a long shaft flat blade screwdriver and getting it in there and just popping it loose from the hinges. Some people used one of those claw gripper things to grab onto it because when the flapper pops loose it tends to shoot toward the airbox and then you have to remove the mid fairing to get to it.

I recently did this mod but I already had the mid fairings off for something else I'm working on. I removed the diaphragm springs but I was surprised at how that flapper door shot toward the airbox side of the intake when I pried it loose from the hinges.

Maybe stuff a rag behind it that you can reach in and remove afterward.

yeah i might to try that lol

i was doing it with a long screw driver through the front with a torch and my fingers through the top lol

maybe with out the fairings will be alot easier

i did a flapper valve mod.to my 2008 1000, i removed plastic access panels near the front of fuel tank to remove the vacuum lines at the control valve solenoids to diaphragm & simply plugged both ends causing flapper valves to stay wide open with out destroying my air duct system.this will also keep your motorcycle from throwing a check engine light - i also removed the cable at the electric actuator to keep the exhaust flap valve open - the end result was my motorcycle pulled a lot harder, a very noticeable improvement. (note the bike is what it is, if you want more, go big, hrc kit.)
