Mine has some scratches so I was thinking rather than worry about either have 2 sets of keys or swapping gas cap, igniton, and trunk key, just to paint or powdercoat the thing. Wondering if anyone has done this successfully and how it turned out, tips, etc

Also on a related note, Ive been looking at the stickers they sell but not feeling the carbon fiber. Maybe they make one for a 2006 that is just plain black? Havent found it but maybe you guys know

Thanks!

I think that would get you 2 sets of keys. I never saw the lock removed in that video. Thats what you wanted to avoid. But a good price, $25 for powdercoated cap when its all said n done. If price hasnt changed in 5yrs.

Yeh. Well if im understanding correctly, the guy will separate the lock from the cap, then powdercoat the cap. Then the lock needs to be reattached. Thus, you keep the same key.

I did mine on my old 600rr and I had it powder coated sun gold but but the end of the summer it started to chip away because after of the gas was startng to eat the powder coat away.

Yes you can powdercoat it.. but if you nick the edges of the powdercoat, the gas will eat under it and make it lift easy.. kind of like what Book said.

on show bikes, I have seen people go years with powdercoated gas caps without issue, but they are extremely careful when filling their bikes.

Personally I would repaint it with a dark 2 part epoxy paint. that should last longer then the OEM silver, and if it ever has an issue, its not a big deal to repaint.

as far as the lock/key worry.. you CAN have any good locksmith rekey the lock. so if you want to get a second hand gas cap to try this powdercoating on, go for it.
just have a locksmith rekey it to match your current key first.

Gas will start to eat it. Thats why I used a clear coat over it. Be advised tho putting a clear coat on top of dip will make it much harder to pull off. Plastidip now has there style of clear coat. Never used it tho. Check out

Nope, it worked as if I never painted it.

how did you paint it? I mean, did you take the key off of the housing? Did you cover the key hole so no paint got in there? Any special kind of spray paint? I noticed your bolts look black too, did you paint this with it installed on the bike and just mask around it?

Also, isnt the tire hugger already black? :)
