Brake vibration or shudder under hard breaking...

My bike is basically new and I have around 1200 miles on it. When I'm above 50mph and I brake hard, my front end shudders or shakes. Braking is smooth if I am going slow or not braking hard. Anyone else have this problem or know what it might be? Could my rotors be warped? Thanks!

Assuming it's an obvious noticable shudder, I've encountered this twice on recent CBR1000RRs and both times the discs (rotors) were warped. They both had a lot more than 1200 miles on them though (around 10k).

So I took the bike out on a long empty road today. I decelerated hard from around 80mph to 40mph about 10x or so. Shaking is gone. Not sure if the pads needed to be seated or what. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

My '07 has done this since new, seems to shudder a bit under hard braking right before I come to a full stop, don't feel it at higher speed.

Roadracing World complained about a warped/chattery rotor feel on their test bike during the annual liter bike shootout back in '07 and downgraded the brakes on the 100RR for that reason. I don't abuse my brakes and this is the only bike that I own that has the issue.
Will try new brake pads and see if it helps.

check tire pressure

if you are getting chatter when braking hard, you need to check your front wheel/caliper area for loose bolts as well as check the head bearings to make sure they are seated and torqued correctly.

i havent noticed any of the issues that plagued the 04-07 on the 08+ (shuddering right before coming to a stop).

I have this problem on my 08 1KRR but it makes a clicking sound only from the front brakes though. I mentioned it to the dealer when they put new tires on my bike to check the brakes for me. The mechanic said it was the space between the pads and the caliper making the sound.. but that still doesn't make sense cause there shouldn't be any space when you are braking. the brakes pads depress against the caliper pistons and then pushes against the rotors. I am taking it to another dealer to get a second opinion.

Have you checked your steering stem bearings for proper torque? (now I see lexus rx posted the same in his response)

It seems to me this is a likely culprit if your whole front end is shaking. These bearings do work loose even with tiny bumps in the road during normal riding but especially if you're coming down from wheelies, etc. They normally get re-torqued as part of periodic service. (this goes for zoomr81, too)

If you're going to do it yourself then make sure to have the right tools (sometimes a special spanner from the manufacturer, front stand that supports the bike from the bottom of the steering stem, torque wrench) and the proper torque specs from the service manual.

Check into it, but I think it's more likely than warped rotors or loose calipers for what you described.

I have (had) the same on my 06 blade. Tried everything, new brake pads, new tyres, changed the rotors, serviced the front shocks (new springs), checked the head bearings, it all didn't help. During a tyre change last year they noticed I had a bad front wheel bearing. New bearings did the trick.
