hi there, ive now done 150km and have a couple of questions for you guys please.

1) is it normal to have a tiny bit of engine noise on these bikes. as in it doesnt sound like a sewing machine?

2) what kind of oil should i keep handy for a top up if need be, being that it is on its first oil ever. do they put synthetic or non synthetic in for break in.

one thing i have noticed is EPIC FAIL honda for the dipstick instead of sight glass for oil

other than that what a cracking bike.

oh and do the 11's use oil?

cheers.

The owner's manual says to use 10W-30. That's probably what is in it from the factory. It is not synthetic.

Some noise is OK. If you want it to sound meaner without spending any money do the exhaust flapper mod.

What's wrong with the dipstick? My old Yamaha had a site glass that tended to get dirty and made it harder to see. I think it is easier to use a dipstick. You don't have to be looking at it to check the oil level as you hold the bike up at its balance point.

Pull the stick out, wipe it off, hold the bike up at the balance point with both tires touching level ground, insert the dipstick all the way in until it bottoms out against the case, rotate the dipstick COUNTER clockwise a full turn or more to get oil all the way around the stick and then remove it and see where the level is.

1) hell yes. DO NOT over analyze this!!! You're sitting on top of motor. It will make noise. always. the 08+ models make noise.

2) the oil thing will be a never ending debate. i ride my new bikes for a thousand or so until they get syn. but i'm sure some go syn asap. i love the dipstick. much more exact imo

yep, no worries about the noise. im not worried about using oil either, as long as its common then ill top it up happily and keep an eye on it.

This bike is really quite unbelievable. I traded my ducati multistrada on it, which i thought was powerful. boy was i wrong. I am astounded as to how honda can make such a powerful bike whilst still keeping it refined and linear in its delivery. even standard.

I liked the sight glass on my 07 cbr600rr, but now that I have the dipstick, I don't mind either method.

I've done just over 800 miles in the week since I got my leftover '11 1K (460 mi this past Friday 03 AUG alone) and honestly if you think this bike makes a lot of noise you should try a ZX-6R. They sound like a UPS truck by comparison. The 1K is smooooooth. I'm blown away at the difference. Did my first oil change to dino Honda GN-4 10W-40 at just over 300 mi; will probably switch to Maxima semi-synthetic at 1000 and full syn at 1500 or 2000.

I haven't got an opinion yet on the dipstick - I did like the sight glass on my ZX-6R but we'll see. Both have their dis-/advantages.
