removing the complete flapper assembly can be tricky. the vacuum res. is located under the upper stay right across from the horn. remove both mids and disconnect each ram air duct from the mid so you can get the flaps out.

be careful removing your plastics or you will be buying new ones. removing them is not as easy as the 04-07's.

Just took out the flappers on my 08 this evening. Smoother/snappier in the lower RPMs. Also has a nice deeper growl to her when down lower.

I took the flaps out as well. You can just stick a long screw driver in there and pry them out of their hinge sockets. You just need to make sure you don't accidentally send them back in there really far. I almost had one of mine sneak back in there beyond my sight or reach. Luckly I had one of those long flexible magnet slash grabbers that reached back in there to get it. On the other side I just laid that same flexible magnet grabber thing on top of the door so when it cut loose it wouldn't go anywhere. I figured it couldn't hurt having the doors all the way out, plus it just seems like there is less to get in the way of good ole rammed air... and living at high altitude, I need all the air I can get

Guess that will be tomorrows project!!

Hey all, well I had to move up here from the ol 600rr.net forum. Bought the 1000rr around two weeks ago, havent ridden it much the past few days as I need to get the oil changed. I am already at like 650 miles, was after the first week. That seats nice! Anyways I did the exhaust flap mod and was wondering if anyone else did? I havent noticed any difference in power, though it does sound a lot nicer! There is still another valve down in there but I am pretty sure that one may be beneficial to low end torque. Ill take pics if you all want.

i'd definately like pics. i've been wondering what to do about that valve. i'll do the flapper mod tonight

OK, be warned!!

So I get up this morning to completly remove the two flapper doors. Left one went with no problems, popped it off the hinges with a long screwdriver and used the 4 pronged grabber thingy to pull it out.

The right side.........while trying to pop it off the hinges, resulted in th shooting all the way up the ram air tube and in to the air box.
Which meant that I got to completly pull the top of the bike apart to get it. Since I was in there I took pic's to maybe help someone out in the future

How difficult was it to take the top off?

That was exactly what [almost] happened to me. Same side and everything. Fortunately, I could barely see the corner of the door and was able to work it back to me. I think it was damn close to where yours ended up.

For those who still plan to do it... just make sure you lay something (like the flexible long four pronged fgrabber things) on top of the door prior to popping it off... OR you could take the spring that is attached to the door... leave it attached to the door and take a long flat narror screw driver and push it into the spring... thereby holding on to it and preventing it from going anywhere.

who's blue honda is that? B's?
Yeah, she had a lil off road adventure a couple weeks ago. Everything is fixed with the exception of the front fairing (really expensive!!).

If you have removed the tank cover of any year 1000RR or 600RR then your good, process is the same- remove seat, 4 bolts hold on the tank cover, 2 bolts hold the gas tank down, rotate tank up and you have access to the ECU and airbox.

i took out the diaphrams today and removed the springs. the springs are really in there! i need to get better access to the flappers to actually take them out though. i tried to pry with a long screwdriver from the front but it wasn't working out so well

Thanks for the write-up.

This is much easier than removing the rear passenger pegs. :thefinger:

I wonder how this mod would pair with removing the exhaust flapper, which is easy as well. My concern is there may be a loss of midrange.

The exhaust mod would be very easy to do.

Thats odd, I've had mine done for a couple days and got no light. I only removed the diaphrams and the flapper doors, no electronics.

Had to be those two wires, its the only difference between what I did and what you removed. Anyone have a wiring schmatic??
