Gents,
Removed the SP subframe and weighed it in comparison to the standard and the difference is minimal!!!!
SP subframe 2.4kgs
Standard 2.55kgs
I am no mathematical genius but the weight saving of 155grams is not as huge a difference as i expected.
Thanks all you for your replies, it gave me food for thought.
Really appreciate it?

Hi,

I'm new at forum and I caught the title and I have to write something about the topic. I did the rear passenger modification and I'm using it by 1 year approximately. I have 16 hrc sp and like the others said, it can be possible. Firstly, I demount rear frame completely and right hole was threaded, left hole was not threaded. I ordered a pillion seat, and rear passenger pegs from china, then mounted it. The threaded one is OK, but the left side is a problem. I mounted the pegs to left side with glue or something but it works. It can likely be fail, but the pegs cannot leave the frame because of the parts are very tight so pegs cannot move, only vibrate. I strongly recommed that you should put a helicoil inside the hole, so I will do so. Many people sit on my back and no problem with the frame, even a 95kg guy :) Thanks.

I did the helicoil and it worked very well. The aluminum is easy to tap. I've had no issues with a passenger as well. Thanks for the input to the topic. We'd love to see a picture of yours as well!

I know this thread is old now..but some might find this still useful. I changed out the original SP sub-frame with the RR model. I priced everything through Honda and it was way too expensive (approx. $500-600) not including labor. I decided to look at the schematics side-by-side, and I could not see any real difference in structure/attachment points between models. I then bought a sub-frame and passenger pegs w/mounts off of ebay from a 2012 parts bike for $250.00. After touching the paint up a little and cleaning everything up...I went ahead with the install. It took me about 3 hours to complete, and turned out great! In this way, there are no holes to drill, no worries about strength, and it's perfectly safe. I ordered a rear passenger seat from Mad Hornets for $38.00 to match the Repsol colors. I don't have a picture with the rear seat on yet...but I can add later if anyone wants to see it. Anyway, now I have the bike I love with all of the SP goodies (Brembo brakes, Ohlins Suspension etc.), but I am able to have my wife ride with me!

I did this same mod on my 2014 SP. I bought a 2012 Subframe as that was the only year at the time that came close to matching the color of the SP. Ran that for 3 years w/o any issues. Carried my girlfriend several times w/o any issues.

I now have a 2017 SP and it is not so easy. I think I'm going to just weld back in re-enforcement where mother Honda cut them out of the SP sub-frame. I'll probably just create a threaded sleeve into the area where the foot megs go in. The main reason is the stock sub-frame from Honda now is like $650. I think I paid like $300 back in '14.

The stock sub-frame is $430 from Partzilla and qualifies for free shipping. Tell your local Honda dealer to match the Partzilla price if they want your business.
As for the subframe itself, we have compared and the Base, ABS, SP and SP2 all seem to be exactly the same castings. Although the black paint may be hiding the real difference.

As for using a rear seat and foot pegs, a couple folks have even done it on the SP2, no issues, however some exhausts use the footpeg hanger holes and exhaust hanger mount points.

Sooo I actually wanna tap the subframe on my SP but only to add racing hooks (purely for the look) and also mount my license plate way back there with some brackets that I have seen someone else do on BMW s1000RR.

Easily done with a Time Sert or Helicoil. I prefer the Time Sert but either would work.

So, to start I know the subframe has material removed, I know the manual says not to modify... but they would also say not to remove mirrors, use aftermarket air cleaners or modify rear signal brackets... but people do. So my question is, has anyone actually attempted to carry a passenger by rethreading peg mount holes and adding seat. I ask because I have read a forum where someone said they bought an SP subframe for their standard RR but rethreaded for passenger pegs. The person never replied to my question if it was successful..... or did the bike end up eating a passenger between tire and swingarm and spit out some hamburger because the subframe buckled. Joking aside, has anyone put weight on rear of SP subframe or have personal experience with the attempt?? Thank you in advance.
I, (state your name)..
